NJSurfer.com
Started in 1997,
the NJSurfer.com web cam is the first
and longest continually operating beach cam in New
Jersey. Operated as a hobby by Ray
Smith, it was setup to view the beach conditions
to go surfing or
sailing. The location is 15 Ocean
Avenue in Monmouth Beach, NJ. at
40.32433 Degs. N, 73.97602 Degs. W.
Local surfers soon found out about the
site and the word spread. Now the
site receives 750,000 hits a week.
New components
are added as new technologies develop.
Streaming video was considered as an
option but the still photo downloaded
every minute offers a much clearer
picture and is much more reliable.
The camera is an Olympus C-7070
operated by Erdman Video System VM95
software. The site was designed,
developed and is hosted by NJSurfer.net.
The flag on the
sailboat is replaced on average 6
times a year. The high winds shred
even the best constructed flag
regularly. Each flag costs over $20.
and they are paid for by the Google
Ads that appear on the site. When a
visitor clicks on one of those ads,
a few pennies are credited to an
account that is the only support for
the web site.
Comments and suggestions are welcome.
The site is completely non-profit and
is supported by the few ads if
visitors click on them.
Please spread the word about the site
and everyone can always have an Ocean
View.
